MATCH REPORT:   BRO FIGHT TILL THE FINAL WHISTLE!

Dolgellau 2nds 17 – 18 Bro Gwernant

North Wales Shield Competition (November 27th)

Bro Gwernant made the away trip to a bitterly cold Dolgellau 2nds over the weekend to take them on in the North Wales Shield Competition. Having beaten Bala 2nds a few weeks ago in the same competition, they were determined to carry that form into this game.

Both teams brought a physical game into the early moments of the game, trying to come out on top and give their respective back line good clean ball. It was Dolgellau that struck first, with a well worked move to get the first try of the game. Wynn Jones brought Bro back into it with a clean penalty through the posts, but even with the hard tacking from the back line, Dol again found a way to break the line to grab their 2nd try of the game and convert it.

Dol started getting their big runners into the game, and this help them deliver a blow before half time when they scored a try just on the stroke of half time, but missed the conversion by hitting the post. Half time the scores were 17 – 3 to the home side.

Second half, Bro came out inspired following a rallying cry from the coach. The forwards were starting punch holes into the defence, with Matt Jones and Billy Davies giving a good platform, and that lead to Bro’s first try and Morgan Hughes finishing it out wide in open space. The Gwernant side were now in the ascendancy and pushing the Dolgellau side back. The second try came from the in form Ryan Griffiths, who danced his way through a number of tackles, and found himself stretching to get the try near the posts, with No.10, Jones adding the points. With the scores now at 17 - 15 with 10minutes to go, the game was stretched, with both teams trying to add to their points tally.

The final breakthrough came in favour of Bro Gwernant, when Dol conceded a penalty within kicking distance. With the referee confirming it being the last kick of the game, the cool calm and collected Jones, stepped up and hit it sweetly between the posts to give Bro a hard fought win.

“I’m very pleased we were able to kick on from a strong performance at Denbigh with a great win away at Dolgellau. I thought they were very good in the first half particularly at the breakdown and the scrum, and were physical throughout the game. I was pleased how we handled their scrum in the second half and our decision making was much better at the breakdown. We changed tactics 2nd half and tried to play wider to stretch them more which worked in the end, and our fitness was much better towards the end of the game.  It is pleasing to see our youngsters coming through and I thought Ryan Edwards was solid again at full back and Wynn Jones looked dangerous all game and showed great composure to slot the winning kick” Gwyndaf Davies, Head Coach
